Why I’m a Democrat

The America I grew up in cared about certain values. I know this because Liberty and Justice were named in the Pledge of Allegiance I said in school every day. The Constitution opens with the promise to “establish Justice” and to “Secure the Blessings of Liberty.” Also to “insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, and promote the general Welfare.”

The Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party aligns with these values and I sincerely believe will cultivate thriving communities and build a better America. I will only support what I think will make America a stronger nation and I will promote democracy by listening to the people I represent.

On the other hand, the present-day Republican Party does a great job paying lip service to these ideals, but in practice the Republican Party fails to live up to them. President Donald Trump’s entire life as a media personality relied on self-promotion and showboating. As President he didn’t change. He can’t take criticism. Any Republican who dares to stand up to him is swiftly replaced by one bankrolled to fall in line.

This is not the democracy I grew up with. This is not the democracy I signed up to defend 15 years ago. The Democratic Party is not perfect. But it does adhere to true American values and isn’t beholden to a single person’s ego or agenda. The Democratic party is a broad coalition of Americans with different ideas. Now it’s time to unite those voices to build a better America.  That’s why I am a Democrat.
